A Path More Profound Than Poetry / 一道比詩還深刻的途徑

2021

Like unfolding a paper sculpture of a monument and flattening it into a two-dimensional state, A Path More Profound Than Poetry examines how history can be dismantled, reconfigured, and re-read through images.

This series emerged during my period of compulsory military service in Zhongxing New Village, the former administrative center of the Taiwan Provincial Government. As a site shaped by political transition and institutional suspension, it became a temporary and involuntary living environment for me. Being placed within this specific location and duration, I began to question how an individual body, temporarily absorbed into the obligations of the state, might confront a governmental space that had itself been partially deactivated.

Using the typological logic of photography, the work deconstructs and flattens the “portrait” of history, challenging the idea that historical images can be fixed to a single coordinate. By treating the monument as a foldable structure, the project reveals its layered meanings and instability once unfolded, asking how lived experience can unsettle official historical narratives.
